Женское здоровье (от англ. Women’s Health) во многих отношениях отличается от здоровья мужчин. Оно является частью понятия «здоровье населения», где слово «здоровье» определяется Всемирной организацией здравоохранения как «состояние полного физического, психического и социального благополучия, а не просто отсутствие болезней или недугов»➤.

Женское здоровье часто рассматривается исключительно как репродуктивное. Многие группы выступают за более широкое определение общего состояния здоровья женщин, которое лучше отражено термином «The Health of Women» (с англ. — «Здоровье для женщин»). Проблема ещё более усугубляется в развивающихся странах, где женщины, здоровье которых включает в себя как риски, так и опыт, находятся в более неблагоприятном положении.

Определение и область применения

Женское состояние здоровья или болезни отличается от мужского в связи с уникальными биологическими, социальными и поведенческими условиями. Биологические различия варьируют от фенотипических до клеточных и являются причиной того, что риски развития проблем со здоровьем отличаются у женщин и мужчин. Всемирная организация здравоохранения (ВОЗ) определяет здоровье как «состояние полного физического, психического и социального благополучия, а не просто отсутствие болезней или недугов». Здоровье женщин — это пример здоровья населения, конкретной популяции.

Здоровье женщин было описано как «лоскутное одеяло с пробелами». Хотя многие связанные с ним вопросы касаются репродуктивного здоровья, включая эндокринное (гормональное), материнское и детское, а также здоровье половых органов и молочной железы, менструацию, контроль рождаемости и менопаузу, более широкое понимание термина включает все аспекты здоровья женщин, поэтому многие группы призывают заменить название «Women’s Health» (с англ. — «Здоровье женщин») на «The Health of Women» (с англ. — «Здоровье для женщин»).

С перспективы глобального здоровья, половые различия в восприимчивости, симптомах заболевания и реакции на лечение особенно актуальны во многих областях здравоохранения. Большая часть доступной информации поступает из развитых стран, однако между ними и развивающимися странами существуют заметные различия с точки зрения роли женщин и их здоровья. Глобальная точка зрения определена как «область для обучения, исследований и практики, в которой приоритет отдаётся улучшению здоровья и достижению справедливости в области здравоохранения для всех людей в мире».

Продолжительность жизни

Женщины имеют более высокую ожидаемую продолжительность жизни и более низкий уровень смертности на протяжении всей жизни, независимо от расы и региона. Однако в историческом прошлом они имели более высокие показатели смертности, в основном из-за материнской смертности. В промышленных странах, особенно в наиболее развитых, гендерный разрыв сократился и был устранен после промышленной революции. Несмотря на эти различия, во многих областях здоровья женщины страдают от более ранних и более тяжелых заболеваний и добиваются выздоровления или ремиссии реже.

Биологические факторы

Женщины и мужчины различаются по своей хромосомной структуре, , геномному импринтингу, экспрессии генов, сигнальным путям и гормональной среде. Всё это требует осторожности при экстраполяции к одному полу информации, полученной из биомаркеров от другого. Женщины особенно уязвимы в двух крайностях жизни. Молодые женщины и подростки сталкиваются с риском ЗППП, подростковой беременности и небезопасных абортов, в то время как пожилые женщины часто не располагают достаточными ресурсами и находятся в неблагоприятном положении по сравнению с мужчинами, а также подвержены риску деменции, жестокого обращения и, как правило, плохого состояния здоровья.
